Acceptability & Robustness

(BNPP)

BNP Paribas, a global leader in financial services, has entered into a research partnership with the ESSEC Business School Metalab Institute.. This collaboration is centered around exploring innovative ways to promote the acceptability and adoption of AI.. The partnership aims to deepen the understanding of AI deployment, from the perspective of model owners and end users.

The collaboration is built on a shared commitment to advancing AI technology, enhancing governance frameworks, and addressing the challenges of AI integration into business processes. Through this partnership, BNP Paribas seeks to leverage the academic expertise of the Metalab Institute to refine its AI deployment strategies, ultimately fostering a more efficient, robust, and trustworthy AI infrastructure.

Research topics

The partnership is structured around two major research projects:
One of the primary challenges with machine learning (ML) models is ensuring their robustness. ML models often encounter difficulties when exposed to data that deviates from their training datasets. This can occur due to a lack of diversity in the training data or limitations in the model's architecture, which may struggle to handle new inputs. As a result, models may underperform, become overly sensitive to minor variations in data, and require frequent updates.
The goal of this project is to improve the robustness of AI models. A robust model can maintain accuracy and reliability even when faced with substantial changes in input data. By reducing the need for constant maintenance and updates, robust AI models are expected to not only lower operational costs but also boost user trust. The stability of these models allows users to become more familiar with them, fostering greater confidence and, consequently, broader adoption.
The second focus of the partnership is on understanding and overcoming the obstacles to AI adoption within organizations. While AI offers numerous benefits, its integration often encounters resistance due to concerns over governance, transparency, and the perceived complexity of the technology.
This project aims to identify the key barriers to AI adoption, specifically from the users’ perspective. Once these challenges are identified, the research will model and test various AI governance methods that institutions like BNP Paribas can employ. The objective is to create governance frameworks that help AI systems realize their full potential while addressing user concerns.
The project will also explore how model owners can take greater control of the entire AI lifecycle - from initial design to successful integration within the organization. By examining both quantitative and qualitative data, the research will combine insights from AI specialists, digital transformation experts, and sociologists to offer a multidisciplinary approach to AI governance.

Additionally, the joint efforts will help shape the future of AI, ensuring its widespread adoption and acceptance in a manner that is both ethical and sustainable.

As for now, in parallel to the research projects conducted, the Metalab Institute team and BNPP collaborators take also advantage of the partnership in collaborating on major events, such as the AI Summer School hosted by BNPP in August 2024, during which a focus was brought on AI acceptability in front of the group's community of data scientists, as well as during the Cirm annual conference, one of the largest mathematics conference centers in the world.

AI Leadership & European Soft Power

(La Villa Numeris)

In 2024, ESSEC Metalab Institute and Villa Numeris signed a strategic partnership aimed at promoting research and disseminating knowledge about artificial intelligence (AI) across various sectors. This partnership is based on the complementary strengths of both entities and is structured around several key actions.

Firstly, a joint working group will be established to explore a subject to be identified, along with the creation of a scientific or strategic committee. This group will focus on drafting joint position papers to respond to public consultations such as the General States of Information and parliamentary hearings regarding generative AI.

Additionally, cycles of conferences and training sessions will be implemented. These initiatives will aim to address the challenges of AI across different sectors and disciplines while fostering a mixed approach between researchers and leaders.

An ambitious communication strategy and dissemination support will also be developed, leveraging the internal resources of both partners. This will include valuing each party’s contributions, potentially leading to cross-billing, as well as identifying complementary resources.

The partnership will focus on two key themes, organized as working groups. The first initiative will concentrate on the dissemination of AI in businesses, emphasizing "Leadership." The second initiative will explore how AI can become a "Soft Power" to promote our culture, values, and European languages on a global scale.

To this end, two working groups have been set in order to reflect on these themes - each working group being responsible for the production and dissemination of position papers and reports aiming at reflecting on these two major issues.
